    Lilith: Midrash, Mythology, and Astrology

    Friday, June 23rd, 6:30pm

    with Carol Ferris, MA

Seminar is sold out - thank you!

The woman before Eve who refused to be second.

    Back by popular demand!

This is the second installment on Lilith with Carol Ferris, MA, following a sold-out seminar in the spring.

Who is Lilith? Is she only the dark mythological demonic figure of Babylon? Why did early rabbis borrow this mythology of their captivity to solve the scriptural inconsistencies of Genesis 1 and 2 of the Old Testament? How did the dark feminine get coopted in this early midrash, the attempt to unravel two stories of the creation of male and female? How can Lilith's refusal to be second – enunciated in the Talmud and the Alphabet of Ben Sira – be understood in the context of modern gender relations? And what can astrology say about how any individual wrestles with being placed Second, or Other?

    When: Friday, June 23rd 2017, 6:30-8pm

Where: The Little Church, 5138 NE 23rd Ave, Portland, OR 97211

Cost: $15-25 suggested donation - please pay what you're able.

The I Ching was a close companion of many leaders and sages in times of social conflict, and to Jung in the middle of two world wars.

Please join us for an intimate two-hour gathering to learn about the ancient Taoist oracle The I Ching, and how to use its support in daily life, decision making, and in wrestling with your own way to respond to the current times.

Through an integrated understanding of the natural rhythm of yin and yang, we can use The I Ching to navigate the descent of darkness in the world and work appropriately towards the return of the light.

We'll learn how to use this method of divination and experience its immediate response and value. There will be plenty of time for questions and engagement and self-exploration.

    When: Saturday, June 10th, 2-4pm
Where: a home in inner NE
Guide: Satya Doyle Byock, MA, LPC
Cost: $35 - suggested donation, all amounts accepted

Please Bring: A journal and something to write with; a copy of the IChing, preferably the R.L. Wing translation and workbook. (Typically available at Powell's).

If you cannot get a copy ahead of time, I will have a few extra available for use during class.

How do we discern the nature and meaning of a particular time, in our personal lives and in our collective life, and skillfully meet it? It’s a question we humans have grappled with since the notion of Time and its accompanying anxieties first arose in consciousness. Oracular traditions were birthed not long afterward.

What is the impulse in us toward divination about? What does it serve?

In this salon-style conversation, archetypal astrologist and educator Anita Doyle will guide an exploration of these questions, evoking a strong felt-sense of the differences between surface/linear time and deep/non-linear time. We will recognize the predictable, sometimes funny, sometimes disastrous consequences of failing to grasp that surface time and deep time are inextricably linked, and the transformational creativity that can unfold in our lives when we act with the clear awareness that deep time and surface time are two sides of one coin.

Our conversation will draw particularly from Jung's notion of synchronicity, and the oracular traditions that have inspired and informed Anita for a lifetime: the I Ching, dreamwork, and astrology, along with four decades of insight meditation practice.

    When: Sunday, May 21, 2017, 4:30pm - 6:30pm

Where: Irvington, NE Portland (address shared with registrants)

Cost: $35 suggested donation -- pay what works for you.

    The Alchemy of Beyoncé's Lemonade

Film viewing of Lemonade + Short Lecture, Discussion

with Satya Doyle Byock, MA, LPC

Beyoncé's remarkable album Lemonade chronicles a woman's journey in relationship from love to betrayal and rage, then back to forgiveness and love. It is -- explicitly -- a full alchemical journey of psychological transformation within oneself, and within relationship.

The album, listened to in order or watched in the full-length video, depicts the journey to higher consciousness from the lower coniunctio to the higher coniunctio on the path of individuation. It is a journey well-known in the Jungian study of alchemy in the Rosarium Philosophorumand in the mythical separation and reunion told in Psyche and Eros.

Lemonade is a significant contribution to the modern conversation around feminism, love, masculinity, and consciousness.

During this evening presentation, we'll watch the full film of Lemonade (1 hour), along with a short presentation on alchemy and its relevance to the album.

    WHEN: Saturday, April 1st, 5:30pm
WHERE: Literary Arts - 925 SW Washington, Portland, 97205
    COST: Free! Come join us.

Grandmother, the alchemist. You spun gold out of this hard life. Conjured beauty from the things left behind. Found healing where it did not live. Discovered the antidote in your own kitchen. Broke the curse with your own two hands. You passed the instructions down to your own daughter. Then she passed it down to her daughter.

"A New Ethic": Morality and Consciousness in Modern Times

    *Two Sundays* - January 15th & January 22nd, 10am-12:30pm

with Satya Doyle Byock, MA, LPC

The problem of evil is one of the most central problems of modern man. No appeal to old values and ideals can shield us from the recognition that we live in a world in which evil in man is emerging from the depths on a gigantic scale and confronting us all, without exception, with the question: ‘How are we to deal with this evil.’
    — Erich Neumann, "Depth Psychology and a New Ethic"

Following WWII, the Jewish Jungian Analyst Erich Neumann wrote a critical meditation on morality and ethics and what is psychologically required of people in this new era. In his book "Depth Psychology and a New Ethic", he explores the questions that millions are still asking today: how can I truly contribute to the world? How can I balance my personal goals with those of an equitable planet?

His contemplations deserve widespread attention. In this seminar, we'll explore this work together, alongside Carl Jung's reflections on the topic that influenced Neumann.

    Date: Sundays, Jan 15th & 22nd, 10am-12:30pm
    Cost: $40 suggested donation
    Location: TBA, close-in PDX
Materials: Your own copy of the book (purchase soon!) and something to write on.
